The start of a new year is a great time to review our values. Our values represent our school culture. When these values are genuinely lived and reflected in our behaviour and decision making they will make a significant difference for our community. Voicing and acting on our values is everyone’s responsibility. How will you show respect at WUPS?
Respect is establishing relationships with respect for ourselves, others, the past and the environment. Here is what our students have to say about how they show respect at WUPS;
4-5-6A
- Repecting each other
- Listening at all times
- Repecting our areas
- Playing by the rules
4-5-6B
- Helping others
- Kindness to everyone and sharing it back
- Asking permission
- Treating others how you want to be treated
- Respecting peoples privacy
- Including others
- If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything
3-4A
- Listening
- Lining up
- Helping people
- Being kind
- Asking for help
- Using manners
- Showing good sportsman ship
- Waiting your turn
- Putting things back where they belong
1-2A & 1-2B
- Helping people when they are upset
- Filling up other peoples 'bucket' when it is empty
- Helping people
- Using kind words
- Playing with people so they aren't alone
- Don't be a 'bucket dipper' and hurt peoples feelings
- Being kind
- Saying hellp to everyone
- Listening to everyone
- Using manners
- Keeping your hands to yourself
K-P
- Hands off
- Listen
- Helping people find friends
- Being nice to people
- Let people play in your game
- Using nice words
- Using inside and outside voices
- Helping people
Congratulations to our values champions this week for showing our value of Respect. These students have been respecting self, others and our environment.
Keeping our kids safe - Love 40
School’s back which means it’s time to start driving 40km/h or below through school zones. ‘Love 40’ reinforces drivers must slow down to 40km/h or lower when travelling in school zones during school hours and around school buses when lights are flashing. A love heart is featured across the ‘Love 40’ campaign, replacing the red circle around a regulatory speed limit, implying that slowing to 40km/h or less protects the children we all love. We all love our children to go to great length to keep them safe. Which is why you should “love 40” in school zones.
The 40km/h speed limit for school zones includes stationary school buses with their lights flashing. “Love 40” means driving at or below the school zone limit to keep our children safe.
Pedestrian Crossings
A reminder to please use the crossing on Maud and Josephine Street as the safest place to cross the road.
Families Partnering Learning - Seesaw have you signed up??
During the year if you have any questions or concerns, classroom teachers are your first port of call. You can book an appointment through our office staff to see classroom teachers after 3pm Tuesday and Thursday. All staff take part in Professional Learning on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure you have downloaded Seesaw. It is a great way to message classroom teachers directly and see snapshots of your child’s learning. Below is an example of a Seesaw post from 3/4A.
Today we revisited our quick write routine and made some predictions about the word 'lollygag'. We randomly selected the word from the beautifully illustrated book 'The Dictionary of Difficult Words'. Students then spent some time thinking and writing what they thought the word meant and using the word in a sentence. Some predictions included: "It's to do with choking on a lolly" "It's about volcanos" "I think it's a game" We then read the meaning together and everyone was quite shocked by what it meant. You might see your child 'lollygagging' at home, particularly when they are meant to be doing jobs to help around the house! If you get a chance, have a chat at home about the fun meaning of this word. Enjoy these photos of us thinking and writing.
I am warmly inviting school parents to consider joining the Association. I have been a community member for a number of years and enjoyed having a strong connection with the operation of the school. While I soon realised that I wasn’t the Education Department or the school, for that matter, the ability to understand the issues and make a contribution to the school’s wellbeing has been extremely satisfying. Supporting the principal and staff in the delivery of education to the students was an important role in measuring my performance as a member. The time involved is minimal with one meeting each month -1 to 1 half hours of a late afternoon/early evening. Our first meeting for the year is Monday 7th of March at 4:45pm.

Judd Briscoe 4/5/6A

Eli Wickham 1/2A
For doing an amazing job with your maths work counting in 5's. Well done Eli!
Wow, term one seems to be flying along already! We have been very busy in Kinder/Prep, continuing to build friendships, develop our ability to follow routines and use our learning spaces respectfully. We have also been doing some fantastic artwork, including some wonderfully detailed and colourful self-portraits.
Prep students are starting to take part in more focussed literacy and maths tasks and it has been fantastic to see how enthusiastic students are to begin their learning journey. We have also been thinking about what makes each of us special because we know that in Kinder/Prep we are all stars!

Having fun with numbers in 1/2A
As a part of 1/2A’s numeracy tasks students have been using blocks to follow instructions and build a picture. The blocks need to be counted and sorted by colour first. Students then follow the steps on the picture card to build an image. The task is so much fun even Mrs McAuliffe added a picture to our collection last week. Have a look at some of the finished artworks.
Ms Deet Cox
Hi all,
The start of 2022 has been quite unprecedented for us all – and 1/2B students, families (and teachers!) have had to be adaptive, resilient and accepting of changing circumstances. The way these qualities have shone through our students has been amazing – I have loved how open lines of communication have been. I wanted to touch on this initially as all things mentioned above are qualities of ‘champion’ teams – and it leaves me feeling very excited about what the future holds for our wonderful 1/2B team!
Looking back a little further, we had a fabulous first two weeks whilst we were all together. The sense of wonder, fun and community within the classroom was evident from week 1 as new connections were made and existing friendships rekindled.
We were very excited to begin our word inquiry and explore how outdoor learning could be incorporated – luckily weather co operated and there were plenty of opportunities for this!
Furthermore, we absolutely loved beginning our learning about different seasons with Mr D and relished the chance to use some musical instruments.
I for one very much look forward to the rest of the term, and year, working with you all.
Mr Alex French
Covid-19 New changes to hay fever advice
Public Health has reviewed their advice about hay fever in the current COVID-19 environment. Hay fever symptoms are similar to COVID-19 symptoms, so it’s important families know what they need to do if their child experiences hay fever symptoms.
If your child has hay fever symptoms, please keep them at home and test for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test (RAT). If your child tests negative on a RAT and symptoms continue, Public Health advises that you must do a second RAT 24 hours later, or seek a PCR test. If the second RAT or PCR remains negative, this is sufficient evidence for your child to return to school if they feel well.
If symptoms change or increase in severity, please see your treating medical practitioner for review. Please know that Public Health advice can change at short notice, and we appreciate your patience as we respond to these changes as quickly as possible.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office. For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
Covid-19 Faceshields
We are writing to inform you that a member of staff in your child’s/children’s class may be wearing a face shield while the Public Health directive is in place.
The Department of Education face shield guidelines apply to limited situations where a face shield with – or without – a mask will support staff members to work safely with children and provide better outcomes for those learners.
A school may decide that a face shield is appropriate for staff members under the following circumstances:
- when an additional barrier from contamination is required, especially when there is significant risk of splash from bodily fluids
- they have a medical exemption and are unable to wear a face mask
- they are unable to perform their role unless their face, mouth or facial expressions are visible, including supporting a student with hearing impairment, helping students with speech and singing and helping young children or students learn how to read.
Schools will take care to support students with a disability on an individual basis, working closely with parents and carers as necessary.
If you need support translating or interpreting this information, please contact the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450.
