A big welcome back to everyone after a very well-deserved and hopefully relaxing break. It is amazing how even a small break can leave you refreshed and ready to jump back in again to school - even if the first day is always a bit of a transition!
A particular welcome to the new staff and students that are joining our school community. Mrs Tippett is joining our Leadership Team as Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) and brings a wealth of experience from her time at Havenview Primary School. Mrs Haywood and Mrs Catlin who have a great understanding of our school community will be backfilling Mrs Smith’s Support Teacher position, while Mrs Crawford is on Long Service Leave. We welcome Mrs Cox teaching Languages Other than English (LOTE) on a Friday this term. Students in Year 1 – Year 6 are learning about the German language and culture.
Alise (K/P), Sonya (1/2A) and Jason (4/5/6A) will also be new faces in our school as they are undertaking professional placements in Education Support with us, on a Thursday, in Terms 2 and 3 from TasTAFE. Lisa Weary and Krystle Simpson also join us in Teacher Assistant support roles across K - 6 this term. Jess is working in the office on Monday and Wednesday this term. A special welcome to the new students and their families that are joining us.
Aspiration
This term classes are unpacking the value of Aspiration. Aspiration is a culture of high expectations and high achievement. Today in morning meeting a student from each class was recognised for showing aspiration this week. A common theme was students aspiring to improve their writing and giving their best efforts in NAPLAN tests. Check out a Department of Education (DoE) clip on Aspiration in our DoE schools and Child and Family Learning (CFLC) centres . Values - ASPIRATION - YouTube
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing started this week for students in Year 3 and 5. We have been impressed by the way students have approached the tests. For some students it can be scary and no doubt any test brings with it some level of pressure. Thank you for supporting your child to be in the best possible frame of mind for the testing. Testing will conclude today with catch up tests next week. NAPLAN results will be sent home to family when they are available.
A big thank you to Miss Pratt and Mrs Coates for administering the tests and Mrs Goodwin for her organisation ensuring smooth testing periods.
Covid Update
The requirements for students, staff and visitors in Tasmanian Schools are largely the same as last term. The three things we ask families to continue to be vigilant with are that; masks are required in all indoor settings at school, that families continue to monitor their children’s health and stay at home if unwell and thirdly, contact the school if you have any questions about any of the COVID or close contact requirements and our administration staff will be happy to help.
Letters have gone home to families this week updating you of changes to Covid operating requirements. Including close contact changes and updated ways communicating cases to families. You should have received a supply of Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) with the letters. Please contact the office if you did not receive yours.
Let’s make every school day count
We know that being at school is the best place for our learners. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships, and confidence. And every COVID-safe measure is being taken, so that every student can learn safely.
This message was highlighted in our recent, public focus on school attendance featured on free-to-air television, digital and radio advertisements, across the state (you can see these until 12 May 2022).
Hats
Hats are not required to be worn this term as part of our SunSmart policy. This allows students safe exposure to the sun for vitamin D needs, however we do ask students to keep their hat at school in case they are needed on high UV days.
ANZAC Day
I would like to finish this week’s report by thanking all past and current servicemen and women that risked or continue to risk their lives to protect our country. Also, I extend my thank you to WUPS families for attending the Ulverstone ANZAC Day service during the holidays. Sienna and Riley did WUPS proud laying a wreath on behalf of the school. Pictured here are some of our students who represented WUPS at the Ulverstone ANZAC Day service and laid a wreath.
Yours in Partnership,
Angela McAuliffe
Principal
Let's make every school day count!
Welcome to Term 2.
Being at school is the best place for our kids. It’s where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most.
Every COVID-safe measure is being taken, so that every student can learn in class safely.
If your child is well enough to attend school, being in the physical school environment is the best place for them.
From Week 5, small changes are being introduced to how we record attendance to support the transition back to face-to-face learning for students who have been learning at home during Term 1.
If your child has been learning from home, please contact the school to discuss how we can best support a safe and supportive transition back to learning onsite for your child.
We look forward to having all our students in class with us.
For more information on the importance of regular school attendance, please visit the Department of Education website.

Kinder/Prep - Miss Julia Brown and Miss Jess Finch
Kinder/Prep have had a happy start to Term 2, strengthening friendships and showing their increasing ability to focus on learning. Our Kinders have thoroughly enjoyed their ‘Kinder Tuesdays’ in the LiL space and have been actively exploring their new learning space with great enthusiasm. In Kinder we have been talking about the things we like about school and what makes us happy. We have started making some ‘happy flags’ for our room using oil pastels and fabric squares.
The Preps continue to work on more focussed literacy and maths tasks, and it has been fantastic to see how enthusiastic and engaged the students are.
All of the students have been active and excited to participate in our daily P.E sessions which are run each morning by student leaders, developing fitness and an enjoyment of physical activity.
As always, feel free to get in touch via Seesaw or a phone call if you have any questions.

Children's University has started at West Ulverstone Primary School, and Jasmin and Maddison have started with enthusiasm. They attended holiday programs at the Burnie Museum and the Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens.
Children's University is an opportunity to raise children's aspirations and interests. It encourages students to try new experiences, develop new interests and acquire new skills. Each member of the Childrens University is issued with a Passport to Learning where they keep a record of their learning. At the end of each year, children are awarded a certificate at a formal graduation to recognise and celebrate their achievements.
