Values
This term’s focus value is Aspiration. Students have been demonstrating this value by setting high expectations for themselves and working towards goals. It has been wonderful to witness some excellent achievements already including staying focused, building new friendships, getting a gold card, reading a difficult book and writing a whole page of writing for the first time. Staff have also been working at achieving goals around detailed work with the curriculum.
We are so lucky to have amazing Book Buddies through New Mornings. Isn’t this a lovely photo of Eli and Mim reading in our sunny courtyard!
Walk Safely to School Day
Last Friday we had a beautiful morning walk together for Walk Safely to School Day. One group walked from Mt St Vincent Home and another group trekked from the Neighbourhood House. WSTSD seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. Remember walking to and from school is a healthy option but stay safe as you cross the road. Always look both ways and cross holding an adults hand if you are under 10.
National Simultaneous Story Time
This week we joined online with children from around Australia to enjoy a reading of 'Family Tree' by author Joshua Pyke, illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. This event promotes reading and literacy, having with books, promotes Australian writers and opportunities to involve the whole community. Last year, 1.98 million viewers enjoyed the story. This year 2,186,347 participants registered in over 59,038 locations.
Second Hand Uniforms
If you have any second hand uniforms that you are willing to share, please bring them to the office.
Staffing Update
The West Ulverstone Child and Family Learning Centre plans are coming along positively with the decision about the building company and Centre Leader being announced this month. Both roles were based on applications and the Centre Leader also included an interview process.
The Centre Leader will be Meagan Smith who has been working at WUPS in a variety of roles since 2021. She is excited to be part of this new project and looks forward to working with the community for its success.
The building company will be announced soon.
Congratulations to Kirstin Jones who has been the successful applicant of the Acting SBM position (Tuesday and Friday).
Family Engagement Meetings
In the final week of this term we will be running Parent Engagement Meetings where you can talk about your child’s progress and receive their report. We look forward to seeing you, and continuing to partner in your child’s learning.
Persuasive Writing
Students have been busy improving their ability to write persuasive texts and increase their skills using IT. Students in Y3-6 are allocated a laptop to use at school for the year. They have been exploring ways of communicating through IT. This week I received emails from a number of students. Below is an email I have received by concerned boys in 4/5/6A who have outlined a concern and suggested ideas to solve the concern. I will be working with our School Business Managers, Bek and Kirstin, to see how we might address this concern.
Dear Mrs McAuliffe,
We need a stretcher at our school because people keep getting bad head injuries when they are out on the oval at recess and lunch. If they are really hurt then they can’t walk by themselves and it isn’t safe to carry someone all the way to the office. If we had a stretcher then we would be able to get them to the office quickly and safely and call their parents.
You wouldn’t want to get sued by parents for making bad injuries worse. Did you know that parents can sue our school for unsafe conditions and that is what is happening with our wooden football posts.
As well as getting a stretcher for our school. It is disgraceful that we don’t have any padding on the football posts. We have had too many minor concussions already this year alone. If we got sued we could lose over 5 thousand dollars and that is a lot more than the cost of some pads for our posts which are around $600 altogether. We also need new posts because the ones we have are old and spikey and cause splinters which can get infected.
If we got new posts and pads then we would be happy to maintain them and take them down each day at recess and lunch and at the end of the day.
Please think about our ideas and help make our school more safe for everyone.
Kind Regards,
Logan, Robbie and Michael
Yours in Partnership,
Angela McAuliffe
Principal

Home Reading at WUPS
Reading at home can make a huge difference!
Your child brought a reading book home today. We hope to have every child reading every day– almost 1,000 reading sessions every 3 years! What a difference this would make.
Please encourage your child to record what they read in the booklet provided by their classroom teacher and return it to school regularly so teachers can monitor their reading efforts. Books can be swapped every day but reading might also be a recipe as they help cook tea, a magazine or newspaper article, instructions on how to do or make something, or an internet site of interest to them. The best support you can give your child is encouragement, a quiet spot and time to read.
Look out for regular tips for Home Reading on our Facebook Page and be sure to look in the newsletter to celebrate successes as we reward those who reach set milestones – 10 nights to begin with!
