Hillcrest Information
As the end of the school year approaches, we want to acknowledge the impact of the tragedy that happened at Hillcrest Primary School in December 2021. We extend our thoughts and condolences to the families, staff, and community at Hillcrest and in the Devonport area during this difficult time.
Media
There will be increased media coverage leading up to and after the anniversary. The media will likely replay and show pictures and video from December last year
Watching and revisiting coverage may cause increased distress for some people - children and adults alike.
What can you do to help your child
Some important things to remember and things that you can do to support your include:
- Children and young people are best supported when somebody important to them knows what is happening to them. It is important to let them know you are available amd interested in talking to them about their thoughts and feelings.
- Understanding your child's specific trauma reminders and triggers helps them feel more settled.
- Talk to your child about upcoming events so they know what to expect before attending school or a community event.
- You may also be feeling anxious about the anniversay. We cannot hide our emotions from children. it is important to show them how we cope with these challenges. Talking to and showing your children how you cope with anxiety and distress is very helpful.
- Turn to your adult support networks when needed.
- Call the school if your child will be absent on a school day
- Warn your children about the presence of media where possible and help them to avoid lots of exposure to reports and stories in the newspaper and on TV.
The school and your child's teacher will support your decision to not participate in school or community events.

This term, 1/2B and 4/5/6A have been working together as buddies. We have completed artwork together, undertaken STEM challenges, read to each other, written stories and played games. On Monday this week we celebrated our time together with a trip to ANZAC park to eat lunch and play. It was fantastic to see so many of our older students taking time to engage with their younger buddies and form relationships that are positive, supportive and kind.
Mr French and Mr Gee have been very impressed with the amount of leadership our students have shown throughout this program.
This term in Science, 4/5/6B have been learning about electrical circuits. These photographs show students working on making a Christmas picture light up using batteries and LEDs.

Today we had the Christmas casual clothes day, we managed to raise $104.90. It was great to see so many students and staff participating. All money raised is going towards buying Christmas presents for the Neighbourhood House.
On the 16th of December our whole school will be doing our colour run. If you are participating, you will need to wear old or white clothes. The powder we are using should come out of your clothes. All students are expected to bring a plastic bag for wet clothes.
On Tuesday this week all Year 6 students at WUPS went down to the Ulverstone showground to participate in the annual year 6 sports day. This day was with other Year 6 students in Ulverstone. We all had a great time meeting new people, USC staff and playing new sports like volleyball, diamond cricket, and more.

On Thursday 24th November we had 12 students represent WUPS at the primary Tasmanian Triathlon Challenge at The Bluff. We were so proud of the students who wonderfully displayed our school values of being respectful, showing courage and aspiring to do their best. It was brilliant to see students cheering their teams on and putting themselves out of their comfort zone to compete in either the run, swim or bike leg.
Students competed amongst 1200 competitors from across the north of the state.
Special mention to Kendell and Riley who also went in the individual events. Riley was also a wonderful support to the year 5/6 team as he filled in as their runner.
A huge thanks to Mrs Dobson for her wonderful support and for setting up the area, Nathan and Taryna for transporting the bikes and also Leanne for supporting our students.
Mrs Rodman
Our Annual Athletics Carnival for our students was on Tuesday the 29th of November. The day allows students and staff alike to develop new friendships through participating in a range of events. Students were given an opportunity to compete in a full program of events.
A full program of novelty events catered towards those who want to be active and have fun with their friends ran by our awesome Ulverstone Secondary College volunteers. The day provided a unique opportunity for all students to experience success and achievement in an engaging atmosphere, promoting a sense of belonging through our House representation and being a positive participant of the school community.
