Welcome back to Term 3. This term started with staff learning more about the Berry Street Education Model. We will continue this learning next year also. This term’s learning has been about relationships, specifically reflecting on how well we know our students, what we can do to support them by knowing them and their interests as well as increasing our understanding of anxiety in children. By learning together, along with the schools in the Central Coast Cluster, we all have the same understanding which means when we are talking with your child about this we are using the same language.
Our K-2 students were treated to a performance on the first day back. This was a fantastic way to begin the term as all students enjoyed the performance.
Our 3-6 students have been busy choosing a book that they get to take home to keep. This is part of a grant that the school won which helps encourage children to read at home. Books should arrive in the next few weeks.
This week our students looked their best as we had school photos taken. It was fantastic seeing everyone take great pride in their uniform and how they presented to school. I was proud of Cormac and Michael who took the school on some small exercises as the staff sat for their whole staff photo. The leadership that our year 6 students are demonstrating is fantastic.
Thank you to families who came to our Parent Engagement evenings at the end of last term. This term your child will receive an evidence of learning for English and HASS. This will look like a piece of work that has feedback on it from their teacher. This will be sent home via SeeSaw in Week 9 and we will have another opportunity for families to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss their learning progress during the last week of term. I strongly encourage all families to meet with their child’s teacher. Next term teachers will share evidence of learning in Maths and Science.
This week results from NAPLAN have been sent home. This is a national assessment that all year 3 and 5 students completed. Please take time to look at how your child went on this assessment and feel free to discuss this with their teacher. While this assessment is important for the school to help make decisions with how to support your child remember that the work your child does in class is also a great indicator in how they are progressing.
This term we have begun focusing on the school value, Aspiration. I have challenged all students to think of a goal (for the day, or the week, or the term) for them to be aspirational. I have let them know that my goal is to take better photos. I love how students have come up to me to see how I am going with my goal. Please talk with your child about what their goal is and see how they are going with it.
Yours in Partnership,
Sarah
Values Winners
2/3 have started the term with some exciting work in literacy.
We have been working with the 3/4 class to develop our understanding of the writing process - particularly learning about planning, drafting and editing our writing to produce our best work.
We have also started inquiring into words, how they work and where they come from. This week, we had a focus on the long a vowel represented as /ay/.
Students have been exploring how a range of words work and striving to apply this knowledge in writing.
We are excited about what term 3 will bring in 2/3!
In 3/4 we have been reading ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. The story is set in the Amazon Rainforest, and is about four children named Max, Fred, Lila and Con. The children become stranded after their plane crashes and they must learn how to survive in the jungle on their own.
To make connections with our novel, we have been reading ‘10 Amazing Amazon Facts’ from the National Geographic Website as our fluency text. We have also used this text to work on our summarising skills.
Here are some examples of the facts we’ve discovered through reading and summarising:
- Martin Strel swam the entire length of the Amazon River in 2007. – Boaz
- The Amazon Rainforest spans across 9 countries in South America. – Pia
- There is a fish called the pirarucu in the Amazon River that is deadly because it has razor teeth on the top of its mouth and on its tongue. -Tyson
- The biggest rainforest in the world is the Amazon Rainforest. - Xavien
- Parts of the Amazon Rainforest are always dark. – Skylah
- The Amazon is a huge home for many fascinating and deadly creatures. - Rosie
Kaylab - 5/6
You have worked really hard and independently on your First Nationals presentation.
Oakley - 2/3
For working in class all morning to complete his spelling work.
Everlee - 2/3
For an amazing recount and pictures to match.
Tyron - 4/5/6
For working hard on multiplication.
